Clinical rotations

PHI can together with the director of studies for pediatric residents (Studierektor för ST läkare i pediatrik), assist residents who are interested in doing their elective period in a low- or middle-income country -  preferably but not necessarily with hospitals we already have collaborations with. We will, together with the director of studies ensure that supervision by a specialist in pediatrics is available for the resident in the collaborating hospital. We can also offer contacts to help conduct a research project during residency within PHI.

Letter from two pediatric residents who did a three month clinical rotation at Jinja Regional Referral Hospital in 2024;

”We are two pediatric residents from Karolinska University Hospital completing a three-month clinical rotation at Jinja Referral Hospital in Uganda. After two months here, we’ve noticed significant differences between Jinja and Karolinska. Resources are scarce, patients are often referred here for serious illnesses, and the hospital is understaffed. Due to limited medical supplies, parents must often purchase everything needed for their child’s treatment, including antibiotics, IV fluids, blood, and even ambulance fuel. Many parents have low incomes, impacting the choice of investigations and treatments. Consequently, we’ve relied more on clinical skills rather than lab results or imaging.

We’ve encountered diagnoses that we have rarely seen before, such as malnutrition, tropical diseases, untreated congenital cardiac conditions in older children, tetanus, measles, HIV/AIDS complications, tuberculosis, and more. We’ve also taken on the role of teaching medical students, who have assisted as translators during clinical rounds.

We’re deeply impressed by the dedication of the healthcare staff at Jinja, who have guided us through challenging situations with their support and expertise.

Residency project

With some planning and flexibility you may be able to do your ”ST-projekt” at one of our collaboration hospitals. 

Requirements:

• Interest in learning from other health systems and colleagues in and from other countries

• Ability to work on project plan and applications for ethical approval prior to the actual project period starts

• Flexibility and ability to adapt to change

• Ability to spend more than six weeks on the ST-project
